Audio Systems: kenwood sound, ford laser, speaker outputs

i have a ford laser 1981 and just got a new kenwood sound system, it gets power but doesn't play any sound

Are the speakers hooked up?  
Does the Kenwood have amplifiers?  Some head units require external amps.
Did you wire up the speaker connections properly?  That is did you trace out the wires from the speaker outputs directly to the speakers?
Do you have two 12v power wires going to the Kenwood?  One comes from the battery and is always ON. The other comes from the ignition and is used to turh the Kenwood ON.

Maybe these ideas will get you going.
