Audio Systems: home stereo volume problem, failure point, stereo volume

Question
Hello,
I have a JVC stereo system  (MT-V588T, 2001?)
Recently I discovered that the volume control was increasing by itself. At first, in fairly small increments, then it would go all the way up and I'd have to shut it off. Then I'd turn the volume down when It was off and after turning it back on, it would respond again. Today, however, it remained at the highest volume setting no matter what I did, so I had shut it off until I can figure out what's going on. Any help on this? Thanks.
John

Answer
Well, first do a hard reset.  Do this by disconnecting the power cord for a full 30 minutes. Then power it up again. If the problem is caused by corruption of the software drivers in the volume controller this will cure it.

If the reset does not fix it there is a hardware problem and most likely the controller IC or an EpROM will need to be replaced or something like that, depending on the specific failure point. The cost of having it done will be $50 to $100.

Hope this will help.
