Audio Systems: amp probs, kac 7201, voice coil

Question
So I now have the matching set of subs.  Model # SWS-1242D.  I'm planning on getting a new amp with more power, but for now I'll go with what I have.  Put it on my christmas list.  I'll wait to hear from you with the wiring.  Thanks.

-----Question-----
Allright, I've got some model #'s for you.  The amp model is KAC-7201 and the newer version of the alpine type s sub is SWS-1242D Dual 4 ohm voice coil. The newer sub that I had is now blown but fortunately I bought the warranty on it and just need to get that one replaced.  I'm going to go tomorrow and do that and then just buy a new one so the two match. I think once I do that you can help me more.  I'm just hesitate to take it back to where I got it done, because they are going to charge me $50/hour to just look and then charge me the labor on top of that.  Thanks again.

-----Question-----
Thanks for the quick response.  OK, the ohms are both 4 for the old and new versions type S, but the new ones have a 900W max and the old ones only have a 600W max.  I'm not really sure how they are wired.  I'm not too familar with stereos that's why I had it professionally done. But again, I've been swiching and changing connections to see what sounded best and don't remember how it was originally connected. Most likely have it wrong. The description of the amp on my original receipt says "800W max, 230X2@2, HP/V.  Hope that helps.  Do you think maybe the amp is trying to push too much power to one sub?  Or maybe do you have a diagram of how exactly the wiring and amp connections should go.  Thanks again.

-----Question-----
I have a 800 watt kenwood amp hooked up to 2 12" alpine type S woofers.  This was professionally installed. Was driving and bass just shut off.  Checked the amp and it wasn't turning on.  Checked the fuse near the battery and it was fine.  Checked and fuses on the amp and they were fried.  Replaced them and seemed to be working ok until I would turn it up.  Now only one of my subs is working and the fuses blew again.  I did blow one sub awhile back and installed a new myself and was messing with some of the connections to the amp and the connections to the subs.  Are my connections maybe wrong.  My new sub was working good for a month until this happened.  Also, I had the old version of the type S alpines and replaced the blown one with a new version of the type S.  Not sure if that is relevant.  Any help would be appreciated.

well, it depends on what changes they've made from the old ones to the new ones,  it's pretty important to keep them exactly the same.  The real thing that needs to be correct is the ohms. If the old ones were 8 ohms and the new one was 4 ohms that will make a huge difference.  Also the Type S sub is avialble in dual voice coil so depending on wether you've wired them in series or parallel that would make a huge difference as well.  if the ohms are wrong you'll blow fuses and subs all over the place.  if you know how they are wired and what ohms all the coils are please let me know and I'll see if it's right or needs to be changed.  Also I will need the exact model of the amplifier to know what ohm load it's made to handle.
Thanks

ok. well its really a bad idea to mix the subs like that, I do recomend trying to get a matching set whichever one you can get to have a match of 2.
from what I see online, the alpine type S subs was only available in DUAL voice coils.  that means you have alot of different wiring options and combinations and only 1 of them is right.  This is on top of the problem of them not matching in the first place.
I can help you but you need to be a little more specific. sorry,  I need the MODEL number on the amp.  it should be written right on the top, it should say something like KAC - 7252 or something like that.  SEe this picture:

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-bmUejUasOY8/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=120&tab=morephot

you can clearly see the model number right on the amp.
I also need to know if both subs say DUAL 4 ohm or what on them.  Model numbers would be great for these too.  they'd be something like SWS-1242D.
This all needs to be matched up right or you're going to constantly have problems like this.
I'm glad to help so plese try to get the nessesary info and we'll getcha up and running!

excelent idea to get the matching set!  that will make a big difference.  I can pretty much tell you right away why they're blowing though.  You're going to think I'm nuts but the reason they're blowing is cuz your amplifier is too small.  If you want me to explain, I'd be happy to, but if you trust me, then lets do this.  go ahead and get the new matching set of subs but before you put them in please write to me with the model number.  Then I can figure out the correct wiring to pull the right load from this amp.  and I'll probably recomend a different amps as well. its up to you wether you get it or not, but if you dont get it, the important thing is that you realize this. BURN THIS INTO YOUR MIND!!!:
WHEN YOU HEAR THE SUBS DISTORTING, TURN THEM DOWN!  the distortion is what's blowing them out.  you can tell when you're turning it up that there's a point where it doesnt get louder it just sounds crappier.  thats where you take it down a notch and you should be ok.  the reason I recomend a bigger amp is cuz you can turn that up higher before it distorts cuz its made to handle more power.  thus you can crank it louder and not blow the subs.
let me know when you get them and we'll get to work.

Answer
ok great!  You've got a matching set which is EXTREAMLY important.  So the ones you got are these right?:

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-60irkPRpJGr/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=520&I=500SWS1242

they say they have DUAL 4 ohm coils each and you have 2 of these subs, that means you have 4 coils total, each 4 ohms.  so you will wire them as a single mono 4 ohm load according to option #2 on this diagram:

http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/learningcenter/car/subwoofers_wiring.html?subs

wire your subs EXACTLY as it's shown here.  If you need any help please dont hesitate to ask.
as for an amp.  these subs are recomended for up to 600W rms together at 4 ohms total.  and the amp you already have is rated for 460 watts at 4 ohms so it's not a bad match (600 vs 460)  so if you wire it right it should be fine.  if you want a more powerful amp, an amp that would max out these subs would be the alpine MRD-M1005

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-60irkPRpJGr/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=120&I=500MRDM105

or a MUCH cheaper alternative, the power acoustik OV2-1600
rated for 720 watts into 4 ohms for only $185 retail.  HUGE bang for the buck and the 720 watt rating will be fine since they are a tiny bit overrated. dont worry about that.  check'm out here:

if you dont believe me read the ratings, they speak for themselves.  i have several amps from PA and I love'm.
