Audio Systems: turntable, phono section, phono input

Question

-i cleaned and bent the contacts in the headshell and can now get sound but there is a loud hum.this sound changes and disappears when the tonearm is moving at start but when the stylus hits the record the loud hum continues even though the music is loud, and is very audible when the music is soft.it sounds almost as if a wire in the tonearm may be loose or shorting out or the cartridge is bad. i will try a different cartridge   and hook my other TT to this pioneer sa7500 amp phono section and try the 1019 tt on the phono input on my pioneer sx1080 where my dual 1245 is now hooked up and working fine.i guess the easist  is to try different cartridge and then go from there. thanks for your promt reply. ------------------------

Question -
i have a dual 1019 turntable and the sound output is very weak. i have tried different cartridges and styli and the sound is barely audible on phones. the same cartridges work fine on my dual 1245.I have cleaned the contacts and rca plugs.

Answer -
have you tried physically switching turntables instead of just switching cartridges? this will show whether it's the tone arm wiring or your input. what are you hooking it to and are the inputs designed for a turntable?

Answer
sounds like you need to adjust the contacts a little more, the hum is from the grounds, either one or both side grounds at the headshell, or the ground wire coming from the turntable. if you need to, partsexpress.com has the short leads set from the cartridge to the headshell, i'v replaced these many times. i think they also have tonearm wire, if needed. if you do change tone arm wire, be sure to twist new wire to ends of old so you can easily pull them through your tonearm.....good luck....
