Audio Systems: toyota cd player CHKT W59 errror 1, laser diode, toyota mrs

Question
Hello, I own a toyota mrs (import) which has a toyota cd player which holds 6 cds.( CHKT W59) All cds go into the player ie no separate cd changer. Since i purchased car a year ago the cd player rarely play but displays "Error 1" Sometimes the player will work but this seems to be on a long run once car has warmed right up or in sunny weather with the roof down. (I know this sounds strange)Have you got any advice on this problem? Once the player does start working, it usually continues to work, but will fault again once cooled down.  thanks kelvin

Answer
Yeh, age old problem. IT is caused by weak laser diode or misadjusted optical pickup or, in some cases, bad digital decoder.  It does not let the digital inforamation on the disc get through.

In your case, it is marginal in results.  This could be due to the fact the laser diode puts out just a little stronger beam when it is warm.  Some discs will read better than others, also.

Try going to www.partydown.com or similar places to see if you can buy a replacement OEM head unit.  They are very expensive, you know.

The cost of repair is very, very expensive and sometimes wiser to just buy a replacement or even an aftermarket unit.

Many customers are skipping the cd thing and going with a head unit that accepts a iPod or mp3 player input or mount.  Then you can get much more music on a device that is very small.  And it can go with you and not have to stay in the car.
