Question -
Hi, I bought a complete sony stereo system(includes cd player, speakers, 1000 watt amp, 2 10" subs, and box)  for my car from best buy, they also installed it for me. I've had it for 2.5 years and it's still under warranty. My problem is that occasionally when I turn the station my subs make a big boom noise, this doesn't happen often, it started doing it last year, I will have problems with it for a couple of weeks and then everything will return to normal. I haven't had problems with it since last summer but it recently started to do it again. I took it to best buy and they said it was the cd player so they shipped it off to be fixed, but that didn't solve the problem, then they said it was my amp, so they sent it off to be fixed, but at the factory they said nothing was wrong with my amp. Now they're saying it's my alternator, but if it's my alternator then wouldn't I have a continuous problem with it bacause like I said above it only happens every 6-9 months. One person sais it wasn't grounded and I'm not sure what they meant by that. I paid $1100 dollars for my system and all I want is for it to work right. Sorry for the long question and thanks in advance for any advice that you have.

Answer -
It could be the electrical system in your car, especially if it is a smaller automobile.  For example, if the battery is older and a small one - which is common in smaller cars - and in winter time OR in the summer when the air conditioning is running alot, the voltage and current levels can get low.  When the audio system is switched on the delay in the turn on of the head end unit is not fast enough and it sends a dc thump to the amplifier.  So, listen for this thump when you turn on the system.

BUT: If you are getting it only when you change FM stations it is probably related to the fm tuning circuit in the head end unit.

And, you say it happens every 6 - 9 months; do you think it is a seasonal thing, maybe?

These are some ideas to consider.

Let me know then, these answers and we can take another look at it:

ONE:  What is the make and model and year of the car?
TWO:  What is the head end unit make and model?
THREE: What is the power amp make and model?
FOUR:  What speakers are you using (subs)? Do you get the same sound in the surround speakers or ONLY in the subs?
FIVE:  Does the sound come only in cold or in hot weather?
SIX:  Does the sound come only when switching FM stations?
SEVEN:  Does it come only between certain stations? If so, what frequency are they on the dial?
EIGHT: Did BestBuy check the grounds?  (It is simple for them; for example if this is an FM thing, the grounding of the headend can be checked easily and the antenna inputs can be reinserted and the antenna raising connection can be checked for normal operation.  You can also check for yourself if you know where the antenna wire comes into the back of the head end unit; just pull the antenna cable out and plug it back in a few times to make sure it gets good connections).
NINE:  How old is the battery in the car? Do the headlights give full brightness all the time? For example, do they show a little dimmer when the audio amp is on full audio level?

Let me know.

PS: By the way, do you have any trouble starting the car on a hot day or after it has been running a while?  That is sometimes and indication of the battery strength not up to par.  You may need a new battery.

Answer
Thanks for the good information.  Now I understand the matter very well.

I think the problem is either the tuner module in the head end unit OR grounding of the head end or antenna inputs that are intermittently acting up.

The repair should involve checking these two matters closely.  The heat of GA can be of concern as well - in which case the replacement of the tuner module or entire head end unit would be the right solution.  (I am from Atlanta - forsyth county).

Good Luck,
