Audio Systems: Installing an old Car Audio Cassette Deck, radio chassis, car audio cassette

Question
I connected the Orange to ACC power, and the deck works okay...the red is not connected at all, however, I'm getting alternator whine on the speakers...I've connected a ground wire to the post on the back of the deck, could I have made the ground wire too long? (it's about 8-12 inches long).  What else could cause the alternator whine? Or is it because I'm using the illumination wire to power the deck?  P.S. the cassette deck is a Pyramid Gold Series.

This cassette deck only has the following wires (all solid in color, no stripes):

Orange
Red
Black
Grey
Green

The top of the deck says that it's a 12V Negative Only type deck.  Just those five wires are there, none missing...I'm guessing that the Green and Grey are the positive leads for the speakers, the Orange is constant power, Red is switched power, and Black is the negative for all the speakers, does that sound correct?
Answer -
Close, the orange will usually just be illumination. This deck probably just has a couple of light bulbs inside, you could just hook the red and orange both to accessory power.

Answer
The alternator whine is from many things; here are some places to test. Try a new ground wire from the radio chassis right to the battery negative post, and don't use the existing ground wire for the test. Now, if noise is still there, try using a new power wire to the battery positive post, eliminating the existing as a suspect. Also, just tie the red and orange together, to elminate any confusion, and get back to me with results.
