Audio Systems: VCR/DVD Recorder Combo, sound and vision magazine, vcr dvd recorder combo

I want to buy a VCR/DVD RECORDER but I'm getting conflicting answers to this question: Can you TIMER RECORD onto a CD or must you record onto tape and then transfer to a CD.
Also, can you recommend a good unit.  My primary purpose for the unit is to record movies that play at off hours and to transfer my VHS tapes onto CDs.

I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to time record on to a DVD-R. Go to Sound and Vision Magazine's web site (www.soundandvisionmag.com) and search for DVD recording technical articles and recorder reviews. You'll find there (1) the machines that will time record and (2) recommendations for good machines.

I do not yet have a DVD recorder and do not have a recommendation.
