Audio Systems: 98 Ford Taurus CD Caddy et al, auto salvage yards, cd caddy

Question
Tom Clark,

I have owned a Ford Taurus SE 4 door since '99 without benefit of the CD player because it had been removed prior to the car being sold.

I have had a very hard time trying to find out exactly what I need to be able to replace the caddy and the "holster" or device to hold it in place in the trunk.

I've tried to use those devices to adapt the cassette part of the stereo to play CDs, using a walk-man type player, but it will only play one CD and it's too distracting to change CDs while driving. Since I will likely own this car until it expires, any information you can offer me will be appreciated. Thanks for your attention to this problem.

Answer
Joni,
You may want to call some of your local auto salvage yards to ask if they have any factory CD changers for your vehicle. If you cannot locate a factory changer you can purchase one from the dealer but beware it will be costly. You could always purchase a CD changer that uses an RF modulator to send the CD sound into your stereo by the antenna wire. These units will have a very small wired remote that you turn on and control the CD changer. Kenwood and Pioneer make these RF changers units.
