Audi Repair: 2001 Audi A-4 Driver Information Display, brake warning light, intermittent connection

Question
I have a 2001 Manual Audi A-4 2.8.  The service information display works intermittently at best.  On some days, it is normal and bright.  Other days, it is dim and unreadable.  Often-times I will get a brake light warning, when the lights seem to be working perfectly good. Re-setting the display is hit or miss.  Do I need to re-place the entire unit or is there something more expedient (such as bulb replacement) that I can do myself.  The dealership (Audi of Hawaii) wasn't too helpful and quoted a $1200 replacement cost, that I would rather avoid.  Thank you for your help.

Answer
These displays are notoriously problematic.  They can be replaced but indeed they are expensive, around $300.  I purchased a whole new display cluster for $150 on ebay and it seems to work OK.  A number of people on the forums are trying to get the units checked and repaired, but I do not know if anybody has been successful yet.  I'd keep an eye on the forums like www.audizine.com, www.audifans.com, www.audiworld.com. etc.  With reference to the brake light, I would check the bulbs either side, clean the contacts as an intermittent connection will trigger the brake warning light.  Let me know,  Jan
