Volkswagen: 71 VW Autostick ground wire, neutral safety switch, stick shift

Question
Just bought 71 vw autostick, everything was running fine. It has recently gotten stuck in gear. won't come out unless I turn off the car. Several people have instructed to check Vac. lines, but also wiring on the autostick shifter itself. when checking the autostick, found the ground wire was unattached. try to attach, but then it engages the clutch and does not go into gear.Is the ground suppose to be attached, if so, where do I attach it? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Jim,

I would check your wiring -

1) The wire on the stick shift should go to the neutral safety switch on the transmission, where that continues to the control valve (left side of engine compartment)

2) The other wire on the control valve should go to the + on the coil via a fuse.  (on later models this wire goes to + in the fues box)

The shifter itself should ground the stick-shift switch to the body of the car.

Make sure all contacts are clean and intact.
