Auto Airbag System Repair: 2007 Hyundai Sonata Air Bag Light, 2007 hyundai sonata, hyundai sonata

Question
Good Morning Douglas,

I recently purchased a used 2007 Sonata with only 25K miles. About two month ago the air bag light came on and stayed on for about two weeks. I checked to see if the fuse had blown but it was fine. I then jiggled some wires under the drivers seat and the light went off. After about two weeks it would come back on and I would jiggle the wires and the light would go off. Unfortunately, now the light stays on even after I jiggle the wires under the seat.

My question is this - do I have to take the car to a Hyundai dealer for repair or could I go to any automotive shop?

Also, do you have any idea what could be causing this problem?

Thank you very much for taking the time to look at my question.

Sincerely,

William P.

Answer
Hello William:
Hyundai has often had a problem with the connections under the seats for the seat airbags, the seat track sensor and the passenger occupant sensor on the right side.  Sadly, the scanner needed to access this vehicle is fairly specific however as yours is an earlier model, more shops have equipment that can read it.
You will need a shop or dealer capable of reading the airbag fault code to determine the actual fault (call and ask if they can read Hyundai airbag faults before you go).  Then you will know which circuit is causing the issue and address it.  It may be a simple as a small wire connection or as expensive as a new seat and airbag but you need to start with a scan to find out.
