Auto Airbag System Repair: airbag, supplemental restraint system, blue navigation bar

Question
Hey douglas, I have a 2009 Honda CR-V. The other day I was driving pretty fast and hit a dear. It said my passenger airbags deployed but they never came out and it had a really weird smell. Whenever I turn my car on the driver seatbelt does not work and it has a signal for the air bags. Can you tell me what is wrong with my car and if I should even be driving it? How expensive is something like that to replace an airbag or something? Thank you for your help

Answer
Hi Christian:
It sounds like yo had a deployment of only the seat belt pretensioner.  The newew systems are designed to deploy only the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) components necessary to protect the occupants at risk.  The remote sensors mounted under the hood and in the side pillars help the computer determine which bags or belts to deploy.
The explosive charge used for the airbags or the seat belt pretensioner is the same, so the smell of an explosive gas would be present after any deployment.

For more information on these and other components in you vehicle, check out our company website
www.airbagsolutions.com ---especially the resource and component pages in the blue navigation bar.
You don;t need to buy anything unless you are planning to repair it yourself, then you you can purchase a 1-day subscription to see what parts you need to check and replace to restore the system properly.  (someone has to repair the system)
As it is now, you do not have any SRS protection and the seat belts that will not retract or extend are ineffective as well and need to be replaced.
Off the top of my head, I would estimate your cost to repair this system between $500.00 & $1200.00.
Good luck
Doug
