Cadillac Repair: my 1993 eldorado northstar sports coupe, pan gasket, sports coupe

Question
first of all, let me just say that i have been reading the questions and answers in this forum and find them all to be very helpful.

i too am having some difficulties with my caddy, a 1993 eldorado sports coupe.  the biggest issue is the idle or 'sailing' phenomenon.  Yesterday I tried your solution that involved idling for 13 mins, off on 3 times sequence, 1 minute in drive, etc.  unfortunately, that did not work for me, although I was sure that it would because i just replaced the battery and figured that must be the problem.  any other ideas on how to relearn the ecu?

when going into ODB, my caddy shows three fault codes.  the first is P036, which i have come to find out has to do with the egr and pintle valve and just requires a simple cleaning.  i haven't paid much mind to this code as it comes up as 'history'.  however, after clearing all codes, after a restart, it comes up again.  the next code is P056 which from what i can see has something to do with the transmission.  but i cant seem to find more info on that.  the third is s060 which apparently is the cause of my 'service ride control' message and means that the left front height sensor is bad.  at first i was relieved that i didnt need new struts a 550 a piece, but then i saw that this sensor is actually a few hundred bucks.  question is where exactly in the car is it located, so that i may remove mine and start hunting for a new one at the local u-pull-it yard.

my check engine light is also on, but i dont know why, assuming that it has to do with the p056 fault code.  again, what can i or should i do about that one?

lastly, i just had the lower oil pan gasket replaced and naturally the oil was changed at that time, yet they seemed to have failed to reset the change oil soon message.  even after resetting in OBD, i still get that message.  how can i turn it off?

thanks,

Answer
Hi,Dan

The idle sail on is caused by the ISC{idle speed control}motor, either it is sticking,or it needs to be reset,if you tried the idle relearn as i outlined in a previous message and that didnt work attempt this, first clean the throttlebody, cleaning the inside and the throttle blade, usually if it is heavy with carbon the PCM cant set idle speed due to the deposites in the throttlebody, after that is complete, start the engine and let it idle to normal engine temp, attempt to do the relearn again {if you need the procedure let me know}if the relearn still fails, turn engine off, wait 20 seconds, remove both battery cables, and reinstall the cables, see if that solves the sail on,if it still fails then i would lean towards a new ISC motor.
The fault codes,P036 is EGR pintle position error, cleaning the valve will not help and will only reset the code, the valve would need to be replaced.
The P056 is a transaxle input speed sensor fault, this is a speed sensor located inside the transmission input shaft,it gives the PCM shaft speeds and sets up shift points, the only way to fix this code is to have the input speed sensor replaced, this requires removal and teardown of the transmission.
The S060 is the RSS{Road Sensing Suspension}code for the left front height sensor, this sensor is located at the left ft lower control arm and is mounted also to the body at the wheel well,it looks like a box with a arm that attaches to the lower control arm,now Cadillac has issued updated Sensors for this fix, they have switch to a rotory type sensor which is less prone to failure,it is recommended to replace them in pairs due to the different positioning and readings, you can attempt to put a used sensor on but it will eventually fail, that is up to you.
To change the oil message, press the INFORMATION button on your DIC until oil percentage is shown, then press and hold the STORE/RECALL button until the oil life index changes to 100%.
