Cadillac Repair: transmission, air shocks, pan gasket

Question
Hi i have a 92 deville with 57k on it, i recently got it and the previous owner said he had the fluid changed it really did not look that bad but i had it changed at my local cadillac dealer, a few days later i look at the fluid after it was changed and it still did not look the way i thought it should so i took it back and they put a can of tranny cleaner in it and rechanged the fluid, thing is they change them with a machine now and i did not get a pan gasket change because they said they dont need to do that now since they have this machine, i was just wandering if i have a dirty filter the fluid is still going to be not the way it should?  Also sometimes when i go down the road i hear a sound that lasts for now more than a few seconds, a local mechanic told me that is the levler, should i be hearing that?  it sound almost like a compressor going on and off yet that is not it since i dont have anything on.  thanks for reading

Answer
The transmission flushing machine is fine for routine flushing, But I prefe to remove the transmission oil pan and physically inspect the filetr. Since you have NO past EXACT history of the vehicle I would recommend that the pan be removed and the filetr inspected as well as physically seeing if there is any debris in the bottom of the pan when you remove it.

Also install a NEW filter.

As to the LEVLER, This sytem operate ALL the time whether or NOT the engine is running or NOT. What you most likely have is an leak in the AUTOMATIC LEVELING SYSTEM that is on the vehicle.

This system is very similar to AIR SHOCKS and if the system develops an air leak to the shocks the air compressor for the leveling system will operate.

Even if the car is sitting in your driveway overnight, If there is an air leak in the system the air compressor will RUN.

Possible causes:

1. A leak in the small plastic air line(s) at the pump in th engine compartment that go all the way back to the shocks at the rear or front of the vehicle.

2. If NO air leak is found. A faulty HEIGHT SENSOR (very common) of which is located mounted under the vehicle above the rear axle in front of the fuel tank. There is a 4 to 6 wire electrical connector attached to it and a small 3 or 4 inch metal rod attaches the sensor to the axle. A VERY expensive component to replace ($125.00).
