My husband checked everything out on the brakes using a print-out from here. He checked the drag, contact points, the rod, and the shoes themselves. He said nothing looked or acted unusual to him, except: When spinning the right rear wheel, it would turn part of the way, and then act as if it was catching on a flat spot on the drum? (His description). The drums have not been machined to my knowlegdge...we've not had that done anyway. The brake pedal feels fine, normal, except during one of the lock-ups, you do feel a little give for a split second and then the popping noise (I assume this is what you mean when you say the brake is snapping inside the drum.) We just had the tires replaced, but before we did so, this problem caused a bald spot on one specific area of the tire. Hope these details help.

WELL THE ONLY WAY THAT A TIRE COULD HAVE A FLAT SPOT AS YOU SAID IS 1 OF 3 REASONS,BAD PLY IN THE TIRE ITSELF, BRAKES LOCKED UP FOR MILES [DRAGGING THE TIRE] OR BAD REAR STRUTS OR SHOCKS CAUSING A CHOPPING AREA ON THE TIRE. NOT JUST ONE AREA OF THE TIRE...AS FAR AS YOUR HUSBAND ROLLING THE TIRE AND IT STOPS ,LIKE A FLAT SPOT ON THE DRUM THIS IS OK...I THINK I WOULD LIKE TO ADJUST THE REAR BRAKES UP A LITTLE MORE SO THERE IS MORE DRAG ON THE BRAKE DRUMS..SO TRY TO ROLL THE REAR TIRES AND PROPER ADJUSTMENT THE WHELL SHOULD ROLL SAY 1 TO 1/2 TIMES AROUND AND THEN STOP..THIS WAY YOU KNOW THE SHOES ARE HITTING ON THE DRUM..THIS IS GOOD...NOW THIS SNAPPING YOU HEAR,,IF THE BRAKE SHOES ARE CLEAN AND IN ADJUSTMENT IS GOOD.THE BRAKES SHOULD NOT SNAP LIKE THIS.. DO YOU HEAR THIS IN THE REAR BRAKE DRUM AREA'S OR IS THIS IN THE BRAKE PEDAL ITSELF ??? BECAUSE A SNAPPING SOUND IS ONLY CAUSED BY OUT OF ADJUSTED SHOES OR PARKING BRAKE CABLES NOT FULLY RELEASED.. QUESTION: Hi Tom, Just to clarify- when he spun the back wheel, it only turned about 1/2 a turn before it caught. By tightening the adjustment on the shoes, the wheel should turn about 1 to 1+ 1/2 turns?
The popping noise is heard from the rear brake area when applying the brake while driving, when it locks up or when releasing the brake pedal from a stop when car begins to move again.
The best way I can describe it is when applying (mostly) full pressure on the pedal, about halfway the rear brakes lock, there is just a little give in the pedal, there is a noise that sounds as if something has lost power or pressure (but not like grinding- more like a wind down.) The car kind of gives a little kick that reminds you of a squat but is more to one side instead of the whole rear. I hope this makes sense. It definitely seems as if one side is getting more pressure than the other -with or without ABS fuse in.
AnswerHI SHELLY,IF THE REAR WHEEL WILL ONLY SPIN 1/2 TURN AND THEN STOP THIS SOUNDS LIKE THE BRAKES ARE ADJUSTED TO TIGHTLY..THEY SHOULD ROLL 1 PLUS TURNS AND THEN STOP..YOUR HUSBAND IS SURE THE BRAKE SHOES ARE INSTALLED CORRECT..THE BIG SHOE [LONGEST] IS IN THE REAR AND THE SMALL SHOE [SHORTEST] FACES THE FRONT..IF THIS IS THE CASE AND ALL IS OK..TAKE A VISE GRIP AND PUT IT ON ONE THE THE REAR BRAKE HOSES EITHER LEFT OR RIGHT TO STOP THE FLUID FROM GETTING TO THIS ONE BRAKE..NOW DRIVE IT AND SEE IF THE NOISE STOPS IF SO YOU KNOW WHICH WHEEL IT IS COMING FROM..IF NOISE IS STILL THERE PUT THE VISE GRIP ON THE OTHER REAR BRAKE HOSE..WHEN THE NOISE STOPS YOU NOW KNOW WHICH WHEEL IT IS COMING FROM....NOW TAKE THE BRAKE DRUM OFF AND REALLY LOOK CLOSE AT HOW IT IS PUT TOGETHER..I CAN NOT THINK OF ANY OTHER THING THAT COULD CAUSE THESE BRAKE SHOES TO SNAP LIKE THAT....LET ME KNOW HOW THIS GOES..GOOD LUCK TO YOU, TOM...
