QUESTION: 1996 cavalier 2.2 L engine i replaced starter and solenoid car started then would not start later replaced electrical part of ignition switch i believe the problem is with the passive theft system when the light on the dash is lit up theft system car wont start is there a way to bypass or disconnect this passive theft system

ANSWER: Hey Jim,

  There is a way to remove PASSLOCK(R) on the 1996 chev Cavalier but without a TECH2 and TIS2000 programming and the VCI number you will not be doing that on your own.
  The Passlock lock cylinder contains an integrated circuit module that the key transponder unlocks and sends a signal to the cluster that allows the UART datastream to the PCM to aknowledge a 'key in ignition'.  Without that raw data from the cluster the PCM will not allow the vehicle to crank.  And even ifyou bypass the starter the PCM will not inject fuel.
  The first thing to do is put a battery charger on it and leave the key in the 'KOEO' (key on engine off) position for 10 min, turn it off and do it again twice for 10 min for a total cycle of 3 x 10 min.  This will start the key learn subroutine and attempt to relearn the key you have.  
  The easiest way to diagnose this issue is with a TECH2 scan tool in system security.  It will show if the signal is being received or not.  If you don't have access to one try the relearn.
 Replacement of the passlock cylinder is a breeze if you need to do it.

QUESTION: how do you replace the passlock cylinder the manual i read said to remove steering column and drill a hole to get old cylinder out the one in the car is very stubborn and wont allways turn i would like to replace it thankyou very much for your elp

Hey,


  Remove upper and lower column covers,  Turn lock cylinder to the RUN position.  Press the locking button at the back of the column core housing. Remove lock cylinder and lock cylinder preload spring.  To install reverse installation.  Make sure lock cylinder is in the run position and insert.  Tabs will click when seated.
  With the new lock cylinder in it will go into tamper mode and have to be reprogrammed.
