Chevrolet Repair: Chevy Cavalier EGR valve, chevy cavalier, egr valve

Question
My 1991 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 EGR valve needs replacement. I have read on the internet and have been told by several mechanics that the valve can be removed and the hole blocked off with no harm to the car.

One person told me it could cause problems sooner or later, but couldn't say what the problem(s) may be.

Who is correct? Can the valve be removed and the hole blocked without damaging the car? Could the vacuum tube connected to the valve be disconnected and the hole in the valve and tube plugged, with the same results as removing the valve?

Answer
You could remove the valve and block the es\xhaust passage and the passage going into the engine.  But if you are going to go through that much trouble why don't you just install a valve from your local parts store.  It is also illegal to disable and emissions system on your vehicle.
