Chevrolet Repair: 2000 S10 slave cylinder?, clutch pedal, gm vehicles

Question
After a few days of difficult shifting, (and a small but curious drip), the clutch on my 2000 S10 has gone out completely...The clutch pedal is loose and presses all the way to the floor without engaging. I have been told the slave cylinder needs to be replaced. I checked and replaced DOT 3 brake fluid in the clutch (which was very low), but it didnt seem to help. My questions are as follows,
A. What should I look for to indicate if my slave cylinder needs replacing and how difficult would something like this be to fix if tackled by myself and my dad (both who have little knowledge of GM vehicles)?
and
B. (Roundabout) What is a reasonable estimate for parts and labor to replace the slave cylinder if need be? I have been told I could pay anywhere from $700.00 to $3000.00.
Thank you ahead for your answer and time. :)

Answer
$700 to $3000???
Only if you have to fly the mechanic out to you!!
On a scale of 1 to 10 ,10 being the worst I would say this fix is a 4.
Buy the fluid and slave cylinder, remove the old, replace the new, do not pump when bleeding. Instead, push to floor and hold, then break bleeder open and close after counting to 3. Continue this several times until the air is out of the system. Don't lift the pedal, just let it come up by itself. It is not uncommon for the master cylinder to be bad at the same time, so, expect the unexpected.
