Answer
Let me see if I have this correct.

You have an UNKNOWN year Studebaker.

You have a chevy 350 engine in it.

You have a 350 transmission in it.

QUESTION:

Does the transmission have the overdrive in it ?.

What you may have is a minor fault in the overdrive circuit whereas, As soon as the trans shifts into 3rd gear the overdrive is engaging at the exact same time.

Is there a square plastic electrical plug plugged into the side of the transmission ?.

E-mail me some pictures of ANY wiring that plugs into the trans or of any electrical plugs that are attached to the trans.
