Answer
Hello Cliff,
You already have well over 125,000 miles on a 2000 model? I wonder why you spend all the extra money on a four wheel drive with that many hiway miles.
At any rate, the inner joint just unbolts, and nothing will fly apart.
And just push it through with a hammer handle, or something like that.
The only problem, though, is the shaft usually won't collapse enough to allow you to remove it without disconnecting stabilizer bar, Tie rod,  and possibly a ball joint.
By the way, don't use an impact gun to remove that big nut, or tighten it. You can chip gears inside the diff.
