Chevrolet Repair: freeze plugs, freeze plugs, freeze plug

Question
two freeze plugs went bad and I am replacing them with brass ones. Got a Snap-On freeze plug installation tool but not sure how to use it. ALLDATA says under no circumstances is the plug to be driven into the bore using a tool that contacts the flange. The tool I have looks like that is the way you use it. each size disk is two levels with one being smaller than the other. Like a wedding cake is stacked. Also has a hole  on one side for handle drive.. How do I use it?

Answer
Hi Bill,
I am unfamiliar with that tool, but it may be that AllData  means "contacts the inside of the flange" around the tool. If it is a close fit before you start, then when you drive it into the hole, it will compress around the tool and grip it, and could deform the plug, or damage the hole in the block.
I would use a tool that will barely fit inside the hole in the block, ie about the same outside diameter of the plug.
