The 1698 code typically means the digital data signal that is sent out by the electronic transmission is not being received at the instrument cluster. It may simply be a poor connection of one of the wires that carry that signal, typically at the joint between the closter socket and the cluster circuit board. That would be corroborated by there being a 0500 code meaning no speed sensor signal reaching the cluster because that is one of the signals that is carried by that digital data signal. If you will tell me the year, model of the vehicle I should be able to point you toward the specific wires that may be involved.
