Chrysler Repair: jerking back of vehicle, chrysler sebring, shift rod

Question
i have a 2005 chrysler sebring and it jerks back when i am stopped or the vehicle is in park. occasionally it also jerks back when i accelerate to a higher speed.it also has no check engine light on it for my mechanic to check it. what wrong with the vehicle?

Answer
Hi Victoria,
When you say "jerks back" I picture that as if the transmission was momentarily put into reverse. Does that seem correct? At least I can picture that if it is in Park, and maybe even when at a stop (but in what gear shift setting?) I don't know what jerking back might be like when you "accelerate to a higher speed? Do you mean the acceleration momentarily falters and then resumes?
One possibility for the 'jerk back' in Park gear would be that the gear shift lever to transmission shift rod cable connection is out of adjustment, and that is an easy fix at the transmission end of the shift cable housing. Another possiblity is that one of the engine mounts is weakened and causing the entire powertrain (engine and transmission) to rotate in its position enough to cause the gear shift cable to slightly shift the vertical shift rod at the transmission, thus causing the trans to shift from one gear position to the adjacent position for a moment. So ask the mechanic to consider those two possibilities.
