Chrysler Repair: Clicking noise continues when turn signal is off, chrysler sebring, sebring lx

Question
QUESTION: Hi Roland:

I have 1999 Chrysler Sebring LX coupe 2.5L V6. The other day i started it and there was this fast clicking noise. It would kind of went to normal clicking speed and fast clicking would disappear if i signaled left/right turn or if i turned hazardous lights. As soon as signal was off fast pace clicking would continue intermittently. I was wondering if you could tell me  which part might need replacement and how hard would it be to DIY. Fyi - Last year i also had my fog lights stop working all of a sudden so i am not sure if this is related.

Thanks for your time and answer in advance. Boban.

ANSWER: Hi Boban,
If you can located what is clicking it would be possible to figure out the solution. But just a clicking sound is not enough for me to go on. So use your ears, and if necessary take a rubber tube and use it as an 'ear horn' to localise where the device is positioned.

QUESTION: Hi Roland. Wherever regular clicking noise comes from when turn signal is on that is the noise that continues to come after turn signal is off. The only difference that it is seems to be faster meaning if regularly clicks 2 times per second while signal is on in my case when signal is off it keeps clicking 3-4 times per second.

Hope this clarifies things a bit but I would say noise is coming from somewhere behind hazardous switch at the centre of dashboard.

Thanks, Boban

Answer
Hi Boban,
Have you taken a look to see if any of the bulbs at the 4 corners of the car are flashing when the clicking continues? If so, it may be that the switch contacts are not opening all the way when the switch returns from a left or right turn position to the neutral position. Or it could be that there is an electronic breakdown in the 'turn signal/hazard flasher electronic unit' from whence the clicking sound eminates. You would need to have a volt-ohm meter to check the switch contacts. You might also try manipulating the turn signal lever to see if there is a position where the clicking will stop.
If the switch proved to be alright then there is presumably a problem with the flasher unit that will require replacement. That requires a removal of the steering wheel and air bag module as well as the flexible electical connection called the 'clockspring'. Those are tasks that it would be good to have a manual to do safely.
So I would begin by checking out whether it is merely an annoying clicking sound or are the exterior bulbs still flashing even though you haven't called for turn signals.  If it is just a clicking sound with no false indication to other drivers then you might just want to 'live' with the clicking. Let me know what you find and let me know whether you have a meter and the electrical circuit experience to troubleshoot the problem.
