Chrysler Repair: EVIC Vacuum Fluorescent Display for jeep grand cherokee

Question
Hi: I have a 2002 Jeep grand cherokee laredo. My problem is with the EVIC. The display stopped working almost a year ago, but the unit still works because I gets beeps and warning indicators constantly...It used to come on when I would pound my fist against it, but now it does not come on at all. Is there any way to fix or replace the vacuum florescent display (vfd) without having to buy a new EVIC? As I mentioned earlier, the unit does still work, the display does not. Thanks

Answer
Hi Sherrel,
I don't have manuals for Jeeps but my suggestion would be to remove the unit and open it up. Then locate the place where the socket that powers the unit attaches to the circuit board. Take a soldering pencil and heat up all the solder joints between the pins of the socket and the circuit board to which they attach. That may solve the problem. Otherwise I would look for a used uhit at a wrecking yard. Those solder joints fatigue and 'open' so heating them will sometimes restore the unit to function.
