Chrysler Repair: 1991 LeBaron: electronic vehicle information center, capasitors, radio clock
91 LeBaron Vehicle Inf
QUESTION: Greetings,
The unit seems to still be working, as it chimes like it always does when you don't fasten your seat belt, door ajar, etc. The problem is that the display went blank a couple days ago? I was guessing that possibly a fuse is blown somewhere but had no luck in locating it?

ANSWER: Hi Jeff,
I assume that this if the 4-door sedan model of LeBaron.
The fuse is #8 under the dash but that also powers the chimes and the instrument cluster, so that is not blown. There is also a ground wire on pin 3 of the unit, but that too is a common ground point for many other components on the dash but just in case check that the wire is continuous to chassis ground. The variable brightness voltage is duplicated on pins 5 and 13 of the plug for the unit so you could check that some voltage is present that varies with illumination setting of the headlamp switch.
I do notice that on aging digital displays that these sort of display losses occur regularly but then start up again spontaneously. That happens regularly on my '89 LeBaron radio/clock readout.
You could take a look at the electrolytic capasitors on the surface of the circuit board of the unit to see if any show signs of wetness would suggest that you replace those.

QUESTION: thank you for your response, I don't think this would matter, but just in case it does, this is not a 4-door sedan, it is a two door convertable.  Does this change what the problem might be?  Thank you

ANSWER: Hi Jeff,
That is interesting because the '91 diagrams show a visual message center only in the 4 dr line, not the 2 dr line of LeBaron. How many pins are there in the plug at the rear of yours? The '92 manual shows such a center in the 2 dr. but it only has 6 pins. So tell me what you find and maybe the '92 diagrams apply to your vehicle. But it could be that the same center with 14 pins used in the 4 dr of '91 was also used in the 2 dr.

QUESTION: To find the plug, can you give the best route, I'm assuming it requires tearing the dash apart, is this correct?  Thank you

Answer
I believe that he bezel that surrounds the stack can be gently pried with a soft stick all around the perimeter to release the clips that hold it in place. Then the unit will come out by removing screws on either side of it and then slide it out. It is interesting that the manual section about the dash panel does talk about an EVIC, but nothing is shown in the wiring diagrams for it. When you write back, tell me the number/color of plugs and how many pins and wires there are on each plug. If you can recall, mention what info it gives you.
