Chrysler Repair: 1996 sebring convertible slow operation, sebring convertable, chrysler lebaron

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1996 sebring convertable and the top takes about 5 minutes to go up or down. Some one mentioned the relays I was wondering were they are and if that is reasonable.

ANSWER: It would not be the relays, they either connect or they don't. The motor brushes may be getting weak, or you could check to be sure you have sufficient hydaulic fluid in the reservoir of the pump.

QUESTION: Thank you Roland. So if the fluid id low how do I fill it and does the pump burn fluid or does that mean there is a leak.  Part 2 can I get a brushes or a rebuild kit for the motor.

Answer
Hi Jim,
I personally don't have experience with the system. The pump/motor is located in the area behind the rear seat, on the floor. You remove the seat cushion and the seat back to get to it. Check the fluid level in the pump reservoir. There is also a pump by-pass valve (with a knob) which may be allowing fluid to by-pass the pump and that would slow down the action. I am not certain but I believe it may be Dexron Type A fluid.
May I suggest that you check with other owners of Chrysler convertibles? I am a member of the Yahoo Autos group called the Chrysler Lebaron Club, the majority of the 2,000 member own convertibles. That model was made through '95 and is no doubt identical to the '96 Sebring in terms of top hydraulic maintenance.
