Chrysler Repair: 97 T&C stalls, crankshaft position sensor, chrysler town and country

Question
QUESTION: 1997 chrysler town and country. cruise control light comes on and van dies

ANSWER: Hi Danett,
I haven't seen a reason for the cruise light coming in and the engine dieing. Lets treat this as a stall with no noticeable cause. The first step would be to use the ignition key to get any fault codes that might be stored in the memory of the engine controller. Turn the key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less. Then watch the check engine light, which remains 'on', to see it begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat the process to be sure of an accurate set of flash counts. Let me know the counts in the order of appearance and we'll go from there. Also mention which size (L) engine you have in the van.

QUESTION: did the on/off key thing and counted check engine light flashes  got 1 2 1 1 5 5 hope this helps solve the problem

Answer
Hi Danett,
The 12 code means the battery supply to the controller was disconnected recently (last 50-100 key on-off cycles). If that is not known to have happened then you may have a loose battery cable attachment to the battery.
The 11 code may well explain the stall. The crankshaft position sensor is evidentally not sending out its signal to the controller and that will cause the automatic shutdown relay to kill the fuel pump and the spark to stop as well. That sensor is located on the side of the engine close to the firewall, at the seam between the engine and the transmission, just above the transmission housing. It can be replaced easily by removing the screw that holds it in place and disconnecting its plug. Put the new one back without removing the paper spacer on its tip.  Push the sensor in until the tip of it comes in contact with surface hidden from view, and hold it in contact while you tighten the retaining screw. Then reattach the plug. This sensor begins to fail in the manner that you are experiencing: fails after some minutes of driving, then recovers as it cools down. So I would suggest getting the sensor and installing it.
The 55 code means 'end of code readout' and verifies that the controller has responded.
