Chrysler Repair: CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUNTRY LXI, chrysler town and country, solenoid switch

Question
I HAVE THREE CODES THAT ARE POPPING UP ON THE COMPUTER, P0740,1776,%26 700. THE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND THEN THE CAR WILL NOT CHANGE GEARS, IT WILL STAY AT THE 3 AND 4TH GEAR. IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHEN THE CAR IS REALLY HOT. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT THIS CAN BE? WILL IT BE SOMETHING SIMPLE AND CHEAP TO FIX OR REALLY EXPENSIVE?

Answer
Hi Maytha,
The two codes 0740 and 1776 suggest a problem with the solenoid switch valve located in the valve body. That would be repaired by removing the valve pan and the valve body and servicing the valve body. It should not require removal of the transmission. There is a possibility however that the torque converter could be bad (which would require removal) but that should be able to be diagnosed by a competent transmission shop. I would suggest doing some research in your city to find such an independent transmission shop that has knowledge and experience with the Chrysler electronic transmission and let them diagnose it further and see if they agree that it will be repairable without removing and dismantling the transmission. Please let me know what they conclude and if necessary seek a second opinion if the first shop want to rebuild it at a high cost. I would not go to a nationwide transmission franchise as they are aimed toward replacement which may not be necessary. The 0700 just means that transmission fault codes have been identified, so that can be ignored. The valve body servicing should be in the hundreds of dollars, but the rebuild is a couple of thousand. Neither is cheap unfortunately but if you can fix it with the valve body it would be a big savings.
