Chrysler Repair: rough idle: 88 2.2L turbo, dirty fuel, engine computer

Question
I have a 1988, 4 cyl. 2.2 New Yorker Turbo, runs great except when idling. Could a dirty fuel filter cause this? I have changed all the spark plugs.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Carolyn,
I doubt it is the fuel filter because when that becomes clogged it limits the output of fuel needed for high speed driving, not for idling. The best way to get a handle on the possible cause is to use your ignition key to query the engine computer about whether it has noticed any malfunction that could cause the rough idle. Turn the key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the 'power loss' light, which remains 'on' to see it begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat the process to assure an accurate, reproducible set of flash counts. Then combine the count in pairs in the order of appearance to form 2-digit fault code numbers. Then write back and tell me the numbers and we'll go from there.
