Chrysler Repair: autostick transmission different, or just controls?, sebring convertable, chrysler sebring jxi

Question
Hi,

I purchased a 99 Chrysler sebring jxi convertable with a  2.5 v6 engine with an automatic transmission which has the autostick option. The trans is bad. When it went bad it came apart from the inside and apparently put a hole in the case , leaked a lot of fluid in the street. I bought the car this way. My thought was to find another transmission, possibly from a salvage yard and replace it completely rather than try to repair the trans with the hole in it. My question is.. Do you know which transmission will work in it besides another 99 with autostick already in it? Would a automatic from another sebring convertable or hardtop swap ok if it is the same engine? Does the autostick simply get controlled by the computer thereby making any trans from a sebring acceptable as long as it had the same engine? If so. would i need to know what to look for any special connectors or whatever considerations when i get a replacement transmission? Any thoughts you have would be most appreciated.

Thanks for all you do .

Tom

Answer
Hi Tom,
I would suggest that you check at the parts department of a Chrysler dealer to see what their parts manual shows to be differences, if any, between the two transmissions. Based upon my review of the wiring diagrams and trans section of the manual, I suspect that the only difference is in the shifter proper and its wiring to the tcm which connects the autostick switches. So the transmissions could be the same for both set-ups, and the wiring/tcm requirements are already present in you vehicle. Please try that dealer-queationning and let me know what you learn.
Thanks.
