Chrysler Repair: No reverse gear: 93 LeBaron automatic, 1993 chrysler lebaron, chrysler lebaron

Question
first things first, im not very good with cars haha. I have a 1993 Chrysler LeBaron Convertible. Its an automatic transmission. Just recently, the transmission wont go into reverse. When i shift into gear, the gear doesn't catch. When i put it into neutral, it acts like it wants to go forward. I put it into Drive and it seems to drive like normal. I had my stepfather take a look at it and the transmission fluid was very low. We added the appropriate amount and let the car warm up, but still no success. He made mention about some sensors, and a filter? Anything else i should be looking at, aside from a new transmission? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Answer
Hi Clay,
Because you mention "it wants to go forward" in neutral, I wonder whether the adjustment between the shift lever in the cabin and the shift rod on the transmission is "out". So put the lever in Park, then go to the transmission and find the cable that is attached to the vertical shift rod and loosen the clamp bolt on the cable bracket. Then rotate shift rod by hand to the front detent which is the "park" position of the transmission, and while holding it there retighten the clamp bolt. That should adjust the linkage, so check that it will only start when the cabin lever is in Park or Neutral to verify that and then see if it will drive in reverse.
Otherwise, the most direct way to diagnose a trans problem is to do a fault code readout using an OBD-I reader plugged into the blue Chrysler data link connector next to the under dash fuse box and have the reader ask for fault codes from the transmission controller memory. There are 2-digit numbers that will give a hint as to what might be wrong. The socket is used only to access the trans controller; there is a separate black socket in the engine compartment for the engine controller access so don't use that one (it also has 2-digit codes and those would confuse the analysis so don't try to get those codes).
Aside from getting the codes, and adjusting the linkage, the other 'simple (not requiring a rebuild) cause for no reverse and trying to move in neutral could be a valve body malfunction which can be corrected without removing the transmission but rather draining the fluid and removing the valve body for servicing. A code readout may help the diagnosis. Because the fluid was low in the past, you would want to disconnect the battery for a minute so as to erase 'stale' fault codes due to low fluid, drive it for a while including trying reverse, then do the trans code readout for 'fresh' fault codes
