Chrysler Repair: Climate control: 05 Sebring, climate control unit, climate control system

Question
My g/f has an 05 Sebring convertible *limited (I think. The AC works, as in blows cold or hot. The problem is getting it to do what you want. Sometimes it is set for hot and blows cold and vice-versa, and now with the cold front we cant get it to blow hot. Seems to want to do the opposite of what you need. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Answer
Hi Andy,
The heat/ac 'climate control' system has some self-diagnostic capability that will tell you possibly what it believes is wrong. I suspect you will find that a door inside the unit called the 'blend air door' is not moving in response to requests from the body computer which is connected to the temperature request at the panel. There are two types of control units, one that is conventional and one that has a digital temperature readout. Please tell me which type is in the vehicle. I can print the pages from the manual and postal mail them to you that tell how to do the self-diagnosis, and also the pages related to the blend air door and its actuator motor that is supposed to move the door. Once I know the type of unit I can either send the pages about the door/actuator or possibly there is a procedure to 'calibrate' the them so they respond properly. If calibration is not possible, then examing the actuator and the door to which it is attached may reveal what the issue is.
So let me know which unit you have, and also give me a postal mailing address so that I can send the pages.
The actuator is located on the bottom of the underdash unit such that you can remove is and do the remediation without having to do any major removals. If you don't want to get into a do-it-yourself repair then don't send me an address. At least if you go to a shop you can say that you believe it is the blend air door that is not working properly. I suspect a dealer will be the only place that knows the specifics though I could be wrong and there may be an independent shop that is familiar with the Chrysler climate control unit.
