Chrysler Repair: Speedometer/odometer not working: 98 minivan, plymouth grand voyager, test sequences

Question
I am puzzled as to why the speedometer & RPM gages on my 98' Plymouth grand voyager is not working. The van is shifting fine and drives fine. It's just that the speedometer and RPM gages are note registering while I'm driving. Would this something that would involve removing the dashboard to fix?  I would like to try and do this on my own if possible. Thanks

Answer
Hi Clyde,
That is a bit strange because the data to operate the two meter needles comes in digitally on a couple of wires that also carry the info for the gauges and warning lights. Nonetheless check fuse #2 under the dash and fuse #28 under the hood in rear of the power box to make sure those are patent. If they are and all the other functions of the cluster work then I would have to believe that the problem is within the cluster itself.
You could do a self-test of the cluster by pressing in and holding the trip and trip reset buttons, then turn the ignition key to the run position. Continue to hold the buttons until the work CODE appears in the odometer window, then release the buttons. Then watch the cluster to go throught several different test sequences. Watch whether or not the needles of the speedo and tach move and whether any codes are displayed in the odo window. If none other than 999 appear those are relevant. 999 means end of test. It may be that by doing this self-test that the problem you are having will 'clear' on its own. If you look closely you may see that the needles are on the wrong side of the pin at "0" reading and this test may move them back to the correct side. Keep your fingers crossed!
