Question
i was driving today and will siting idle in a parking lot, my check engine light began to blink....

i popped the hood while the car was still running to check the engine. Wat i saw was sparks emitting from the front left cylinder (#1?) i was just wondering if this is a something serious
or a quick fix i can handle my self

Answer
Hi Jared,
It is not something serious except for that cylinder. I assume that the sparks were coming from the individual spark coil assembly that is located on the cylinder, which would normally be the area of a spark plug. The spark plug in this engine is underneath the coil assembly hidden from view. I would wonder if the spark came from a shorting to ground of the 12v supply wire to the coil, or from a shorting to ground of the secondary spark plug voltage (10's of thousands of volts) due to a crack in the tubular insulator between the coil and the hidden spark plug.  I would suggest taking a closer look at exactly where the sparking is coming from. If it is yellowish and near a visible wire than it is probably a short in the 12v wire supply to the coil. If it is bluish and comes from the lower area of the coil assembly where it comes in contact with the engine that it more likely a short in the coil assembly itself. That would require replacing that coil assembly. To do that you simply disconnect the wire, loosen the two screws (alternately), and remove. Then replace it. If this is the 3.5L engine then observe for the spacers positioned on the screws and be careful not to misplace those.
