Chrysler Repair: 1998 Chrysler Sebring JXI: no start, crank pulley, pulley bolt

Question
I have plenty of cranking power (new battery), but my car will not start. Is there a problem with the crank position sensor or EGC sensor? How do I locate these sensors and replace. Thanks, Dan

Answer
Hi Dan,
I would suggest that you try to get any fault code numbers that may be stored in the engine computer. Turn the ignition switch:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window to see if the mileage reading changes to show any 4-digit numbers which a prefix P which would be relevant clues as to why it won't start. If that doesn't work then only a readout with a code reader that plugs is under the dash by the steering column will work.
Do you hear the fuel pump run for about a second when you turn the key to run? Do you have spark while you are cranking it over for a full 5 seconds of cranking? Those are a couple of basic tests.
The cam sensor is part of the distributor and requires replacing the distributor to replace that (very costly). The crank sensor is located at the rear of the engine on the rear side by the firewall, just above the top of the transaxle housing and is replaceable. But I certainly wouldn't replace either without confirmation of no signal. If you have a voltmeter you can check whether the sensor is pulsing by turning the engine by hand (ratchet on the crank pulley bolt) with the igntion in the run position. The voltage on the sensor wire should vary between 5 and 0.3V several times per revolution. The crank signal wire is gray/black while the cam sensor is tan/yellow and the ground wire to measure that against is black/light blue in both cases
Let me know if you get a fault code.
