Chrysler Repair: Noise from timing belt tensioner?: 2.4L engine, timing belt tensioner, chrysler voyager

Question
I drive a 2000 chrysler voyager 2.4L 4 cylinder. there is a sound in the engine as if something was loose. is there such a thing as changing the the timing belt tensor? is it worth it. and is it expesive.

Answer
Hi Cata,
There is a timing belt tensioner that can be removed and replaced. However to do so you have to remove the timing belt which is not a quick job. But once you remove the timing belt replacing the tensioner is quick.  At some point, say about 100,000 miles on the belt would be a good time to access whether it should be changed and that would be the time to consider replacing the tensioner. I would try to delve further into the specifics of the noise to be sure and not jump to the conclusion the the tensioner is the issue. You can remove the upper timing belt cover which would allow you to listen for noise coming up from the tensioner which is located below the lower edge of cover; simply remove two screws that hold it on.
