Question
i have a 97 chrysler cirrus lxi 2.5 liter v-6 and the transmission will shift from 1st to 2nd and then kick back to 1st instead of going into 3rd or 4th i put a code reader on it and it said gear 3 and 4 are incorrect and a malfunction code and manufacture trans system code i change the computer and vaccum and still having the problem i dont know what else to look at

Answer
Hi Kermit,
Your trans is clearly in 'limp-in mode' which is a fallback when there is damage to parts that are required (such as the clutches needed to operate in 3rd and 4th gear) and srill allowz you to go with other lower gears only. You didn't tell me the specific code numbers so I can't be sure that a removal and rebuild is necessary but if the gear 3 and 4 codes were "gear ratio" errors, then that usually means that internal repair is necessary. I don't know what codes 'multifunction code and manufacture trans system code" mean. Do you have the specific 4-digit codes were for those? If so, let me know and I will see if there is any hope of an alternative to a rebuild.
