Chrysler Repair: PT Cruiser Turbo and not starting, 4 digit numbers, high pitch

Question
Hi Roland, I have a '04 PT Cruiser Turbo GT.  Last week it died.  had a hard time starting and when it finally did, it had a very high pitch squeal.  someone recently mentioned that this may be a problem with the turbocharger.  It has 87,000 miles on it.  I'm just trying to get an idea of where to start the diagnostics.  I was thinking a timing belt, but like I said, I could actually get it to start.  Any thoughts on the possible turbocharger issue?  could that be a place to start, and if so, how does one diagnose the turbocharger?  Thanks

Answer
Hi Paul,
The PT and a turbo are not my strong suit. Why not start with a fault code readout using the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch for the odometer to show any 4-digit numbers instead of the mileage reading. If that doesn't work then get a fault code readout at an Autozone parts store for free. Let me know any numbers and we can go from there. Try to localize the source of the noise in the meantime. The turbo I don't believe spins when it isn't being called for.
Also tell me which size engine is in the vehicle.
