Chrysler Repair: transmission noises and not changing gear at higher speed, transmission controller, trans shop

Question
I have a 1994 crysler lebaron. When I turn it in I get a whining sound. When driving it gets louder. When getting up to 50 mph it will run at 5000rpms and wont go into high gear.I still have all gears but really loud. Is there a simple solution?

Answer
Hi John,
The best thing to do is a get a fault code readout of the transmission controller using the plug that is under the left end of the dash and the Chrysler or equivalent OBD-I code reader. An independent trans shop should have such a reader and can get those codes but be sure the trans is read out, not to be confused with the engine controller. The number are 2-digit. Ask what they mean, what they recommend, and for how much. Then write back and we can compare the info with the shop manual for the electronic transaxle.
