Chrysler Repair: 1997 Chysler Sebring LXI 2.5L Coupe:code 1494, sebring lxi, solenoid pump

Question
QUESTION: Check engine light is on.  Originally had code 456, replaced O2 sensor, now have code P1494.  Any ideas where to start looking?

ANSWER: The evaporative fuel collection system is the center of the 1494.
There is a solenoid switch which controls the release of the vapor from the carbon canister into the engine and that solenoid switch (also called the leak detection pump) is the issue. There are three wires to the LDP from the PCM: a 12V power line, a solenoid switch control wire, and a sensor to verify that the switch is working.
The code says the switch sense circuit is not working, or the solenoid pump switch is not working, or the power to switch is absent. The pump is located in the right front corner of the engine compartment just below the fender skin. Pin 2 of the connector is the 12V supply that comes from pin 20 of the pcm (black/white wire) and that should be present with the ignition "on". Pin3 is connected to pin 77 of the pcm and is the switch control wire (red/yellow). Pin 4 is connected to pin 72 and is the switch sense wire (red/dark blue). Those wire should be checked for continuity. The resistance across the pins 2 and 3 of the pump should be below 5 ohms. If not, then replace the pump. Also check the three wire with both plugs removed to be sure they are not shorted together or shorted to ground.
Please let me know what you find out.

QUESTION: Hi Roland...
According to the Haynes manual, 1997 Sebring coupe did not have a LDP.  What should I look for now?

ANSWER: Hi Kim,
Does it specifically say there is none? or does it not show it in the wiring diagrams? I would not be surprised if their diagram didn't show it because they are not complete.
I don't have a '97 Sebring coupe manual but a do have a '96 Sebring convert manual and a '96 Stratus/Breeze manual so I would be surprised if the same 2.5L engine in a '97 Coupe didn't have that module.
Take a look where I suggested, also see if there are wires on those pins of the pcm plug. That is my best suggestion.

QUESTION: Yes, it specifically states that 1996 & 1997 Sebring Coupe 2.5L do not have LDP.  It indicates they have a solenoid and a sensor switch.

Answer
Hi Kim,
That explains the dispute: the solenoid and sense switch do in fact constitute what Chrysler calls the 'Leak Detection Pump'. When the engine vacuum is applied to the device and the solenoid is oscillated it essentially becomes a "pump". So 'seek and yee shall find".
In subsequent models a true powered pump may have been used, but your 1494 code is saying that the solenoid switch or its sensor or its power supply or its circuit wires are causing this code.
