Question
Hi Roland, We have a 1988 Chrysler New Yorker with a 3 Liter Engine.  The odometer and trip meter have stopped working.  The speedometer works fine as l  am now using my GPS unit to log my mileage and the speedometer is accurate. Where and how do l fix the Odometer/trip meter ?.. l have already went to a local SCRAP  yard and took a unit out of a car and it worked for about a year and this one has now stopped... do l get another or is there a problem that l am missing out on.. I have read almost alll of the question put forth to you waiting  foe a chance to post this question to you and l feel l am not repeating this question for this car...  your help is appreciated and thank you in advance.  ps.. the back lights in the instrumet panel will be off when l tuirn on the lights, l can get them to work if l  tap the dash hard like my Dad did when l was a kid in his car.. lol... thanks again...Pierre

Answer
Hi Pierre,
There are a couple of gears inside the speedometer that operate the odometer/trip meter dials. These are called odometer gears. Usually the one with 20 teeth goes, but you would want to open it up and see which one is bad. The procedure is described at the Yahoo autos group called TheChryslerLebaronClub at message # 33980. You can get the gears that you need from then internet at www.odometergears.com or possibly more economically at a speedometer repair shop if there is one nearby.
On the lights, you would want to check the connection between the pin that receives the orange wire and the circuit board solder joint to which the pin (pin F, red socket) is connected by simply heating the interface joint with a soldering pencil. So do that while you have the unit out for the odometer repair. Also examine the traces of that pin on the board for a possible crack.
