Chrysler Repair: starter motor problem, solenoid switch, chrysler lhs

Question
Roland - When I first try to start my 1999 Chrysler LHS I get a click.  On the second time the car starts.  The problem is intermittent. Roger

Answer
Hi Roger,
If you can hear the click in the cabin then it is probably the starter motor solenoid switch mounted on the motor proper. That loud clink indicates that the circuit that energizes the motor is good. The problem is then either that the battery is weak (is it nearing the end of its warranty?) or that the internal electical contacts of the solenoid or the brushes of the starter motor commutator are weak. So if you charge the battery/replace it if old, and it still does this then I would believe it is time to get the starter motor and solenoid switch (which is part of the 'package') rebuilt.
