Chrysler Repair: 90 Chrysler Lebaron transmission limp-in, 1990 chrysler lebaron, chrysler lebaron

Question
Roland, I have a 1990 Chrysler Lebaron V6 convertible in excellent condition. The car is only used a few times a year. The transmission will only shift into 2nd gear and stay. At about 30 mph there will be a knocking sound from the engine. I understand from your column that this is "limp-in mode." Is it possible to access the diagnostic codes using my ignition? I read that you could do this. Additionally, could the knocking be damage to the engine?
Thank you

Answer
Hi Rob,
I can't give you an answer about the knocking sound without hearing it myself. On the limp-in, the way to get the fault codes is with a code reader (Chrysler DRB II, or Snap-on Tool; either used with Data link connector plug that attaches to a socket that is under the dash on the driver side near the fuse box). The trans codes are only accessible by the readout box; they are not accessible by the ignition key, only the engine codes are accessible by the key. So go to an independent shop/trans shop (but not a nationwide frachise-type) that has the OBD-I reader and the 6-pin plug (three-on-a-side arrangement) to mate. They shouldn't charge more than $40 to do the readout. Get the two-digit code numbers, ask what they mean, what they recommend and for how much. Then write back with the results and we can compare to the shop manuals for the code(s).
