Chrysler Repair: 2.5L V-6 stalled and now wont start, fuel air mixture, chrysler cirrus

Question
I have a 99 chrysler cirrus 2.5 v6. It chugged and stalled the other day. It refired but was chugging badly and had no power but I made it home (half mile). The next day it would crank but not quit catch. I hear the fuel pump hum when you turn the key and after cranking and retrying I can smell gas. It does have spark and I checked the egr valve and sprayed it with wd40 and worked it but still would'nt start. My scan tool shows no codes either. It has about 125000 miles on it. I have replaced the distributer and plugs and wires this past summer.I checked all fuses and swapped around the relays just in case. I'm thinking fuel pump but want to test it before replacing, I don,t see a place on the fuel rail to hook my guage to and what is the proper fuel pressure? Thanks for any help, Skip

Answer
Hi Skip,
It sounds like you have checked all things that are the usual suspects. About the only sensor I can think of that might cause this is a faulty MAP sensor which is off-value, but not so much as to set a code. The fuel pressure is measured by inserting a pressure test hose accessory, between the end of the supply hose and the fuel rail, which has a test port into which the gauge can be fitted. The PSI is supposed to be around 49. Have you tried cleaning the throttle body throat and plate (both sides) as that can be a contributing factor. A failing ozygen sensor, similarly not so bad as to set a code would also cause an inappropriate fuel/air mixture. If your code checker gives you any of the sensor readings when cranking let me know what they are and maybe we can make some sense of this. You might also check the timing of the cams vs the crank just in case the timing belt slipped. Also look for any detached vacuum hoses.
