Chrysler Repair: 98 Sebring Ignition Key Cylinder, negative battery cable, key cylinder

Question
QUESTION: lately when the key inserted into the key cylinder , it will not UNLOCK and allow me to turn the car over, Aux mode......nothing.......LOCKED>

ANSWER: Hi Tony,
I would suggest that you remove the lock cylinder, or at least begin by squirting some powdered graphite grease in the key hole and into the space between the cylinder and the housing. If that doesn't free it up, then before it totally refuses to go to the 'run' position I would remove it for inspection or replacement. You can't remove the lock cylinder from the housing unless you can get it to the run position.
To remove the cylinder you have to remove the upper and lower shrouds enough to visualize the underside of the cylinder housing from under the steering column opening. You should see a tab on the underside of the cylinder housing. Then I would disconnect the - post cable at the battery for electricial safety and to shut off the current. Then insert the key and rotate it to the run position. If you then press on the tab you should be able to pull the key and cylinder out of the housing. Then service it. To install just put the key in the cylinder, then turn the key to the run position (the tab can be pushed in when in that position. Then insert the cylinder into the housing so that the lock cylinder tip fits into the socket at the far end of the housing. and the tab again protrudes from the housing. Then turn the key to the off position. Then install the shrouds and the negative battery cable clamp.

QUESTION: is this cause by normal wear and tear?

I have "Sprayon" Dry Graphite Lube. I belive that is what you are referring to on the Grease.

Answer
Yes, I suspect this is normal wear and tear. It also might be that the ignition switch is mechanically binding up rather than the key cylinder, but you will find out when you disassemble the cylinder. Note the position of the ignition switch part that mates with the cylinder when you remove the cylinder so you can put it back in the "run" position to match with the key cylinder at reassembly.
