Chrysler Repair: 93 Plymouth Acclaim: Damaging radio, too high voltage?, variable illumination, plymouth acclaim

Question
I've recently killed two radios in this car and am afraid to plug another one in until I'm sure it won't die also. Question is what is the voltage output range of the alternator? I'm getting 15.00 to 15.56 which seems high. This is both before and after a battery replacement.

Answer
Hi Greg,
I don't believe that the voltage range you describe should be damaging the radio. 16 volts would be too high. Have you checked to see if there is a fault code for charging voltage level stored in you engine computer? That would be a code 46. Turn the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then count the number of flashes of the check engine light, combine them in pairs in the order of appearance. The last one is 55 which means end of readout.
Are you sure that you are attaching the wires properly? The radio is grounded by the case, the pink wire is for the ignition off draw current/voltage, the red/white is the ignition switched power, the orange is for the variable illumination, and the black/yellow is the full brightness illumination.
