Chrysler Repair: Autoshutdown Relay Circuit: 91 3.3L dies after a 2-3 seconds, chrysler new yorker, spark coil

Question
QUESTION: Hi Roland.  We talked a while ago about my 1991 Chrysler with the speedo/odom that wasn't working.  Well after much searching thru the electrical system I was assured to replace the PCM which I did.  Unfortunately I don't know if that corrected the speedo problem because the car just turns over, runs for a second or two and then dies.  Previous to putting in the used PCM everything worked fine except the speedo.  I even tried switching back in the original PCM to no avail.  My code reader is pulling a fault code 42; open or shorted ASD circuit.  Could you give some ideas on what to check?  I've checked the relay for continuity and under power and it appears to be working.  Most wires are OK but if you could suggest what YOU would check and in what order would be great.  Thanks Ed

ANSWER: Hi Ed,
I wish you had told me which engine you have, and maybe which model of Chrysler you have. But in any case, I would just try by-passing temporarily the relay entirely by pulling it and jumping across the dark green/black to the red/white wires which will start the fuel pump and the power the spark coil, so you can then see if the engine will start and run. That will give us some indication about whether it is the relay, the circuit, or the pcm control of the ASD.

QUESTION: Hi Roland. Thanks for being so quick. The car ia a 1991 Chrysler New Yorker Salon with a 3.3 liter engine.  Yes I tried jumping the two points in the relay.  I heard the fuel pump whirring and the car ran just for a few seconds and died. How do I check power at the coil pack(since the fuel pump is working)?  Ignition on Dark Green/Orange wire at the connector?  Answer when you can. Thanks Ed

ANSWER: Hi Ed,
Was the fuel pump still running when the engine dies? If so, then there pretty much has to be power to the coil and the injectors because all three are powered out of the asd relay socket. No, it is still the dark green/black at the coil (according to my '91 manual). I wonder if you might have an egr valve that is stuck ajar? Also, check the codes using the ignition key: "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing tht in 5 seconds or less, watch the check engine light, etc. Then let me know if that shows you a 42 also.
It could be a faulty spark sensor, and that would give you an 11 or a 54.

QUESTION: Hi Roland. Yes the fuel pump was running during and after the jumper test. I did what you suggested although I first cleared the car's computer.  This time I received no trouble codes with either the key method or my code reader. So no TC 42, 11 or 54.  I tried to check the EGR (I do have both a 1991 wiring and electric and fuel emmissions manual) and guess what?  If my car does have that EGR its not mounted or connected on the throttle body page 14-180!!I couldn't find info for the spark sensor location but didn't get the trouble codes you mentioned. Thanks Ed

Answer
Hi Ed,
The cam and crank sensors are shown on page 14-203 but without the codes I would not change either yet. Before doing anything more on the engine, is it possible that your theft system is in the alarmed state and is thus treating you like a thief? The 'shut down after starting in 2-3 seconds' is the symptom of that. Try to lock/unlock the passenger side door with your key to clear that state of affairs.
Then let me know whether you have such an anti-theft system and you can't seem to get past it. There is a way to take it out of service.
