Chrysler Repair: Brake Caliper: Ruptured piston diaphram, brake caliper, postal mail

Question
How would you replace a ruptured piston disphram on the brake caliper?  Do I have to replace the whole caliper?
I have a 93 Chrysler T&C van.  Trying to get it thru one more school semester before having to buy something else. (I am a nursing student). Van has been great, has 211,000+ miles on it - is on its last leg but still going so far!!
Thanks - Sheila

Answer
Hi Sheila,
These can be replaced but it is a fairly detailed procedure and you need a vice and one special tool to reassemble the piston in the caliper. You need to get a rebuild kit from a good parts store, and a special tool C-4689 and C-4171 (Miller Tool Co.) and you would  want the instructions from the manual which I can share with you by xerox copy and postal mail. The caliper is removed and the repair is done at the bench. I would suggest checking the relative cost of a factory rebuilt unit against the rebuild kit and special tools cost to see how much you would be saving. I suspect that just putting on a rebuilt caliper will save you enough compared to a shop as to not make it worth the while to do the rebuild yourself.
Let know if you want some of the instruction pages from the '93 manual. Use the "thank and rate" tab to write back with your postal mailing address.
